Townview Garden
Club maintains the beautiful garden park located beside the
historic Forrest Hotel on the Northeast corner of Fifth
Avenue and Broad Street, the main street in downtown Rome.
The park features a monument in memory of Karl Dance, a
local artisan and ironmonger.
Appropriately, a classic
wrought iron fence by Dance bounds the garden and sitting
area. During the Christmas holidays the iron fence is
decorated with garland and bows. The seating area features
a sign in the ironwork tradition commemorating Townview’s
fifty year of service, two iron benches, on large concrete
urn and two smaller ones.
The urns hold seasonal plants and
liriope compliment the three large male ginkgo trees in the
park. Seasonally, yellow day lilies and daffodils display
their color and draw attention to the cool shaded area.
This Club meets the 2nd Wednesday at 12 PM, September-May at members' homes.

A BRIEF HISTORY
Townview Garden Club was organized in 1949 by a group of East Rome women, sponsored by Rome’s oldest garden club, Seven Hills. Mrs. Richard Starnes served as the first president and nearly fifty years later served again for a one-year term as Townview president. There were twenty founding members who met in the afternoon for tea so that some school teacher members could participate.
The name “Townview” was chosen for the spectacular views in and around Rome and for the goal to make the town a more beautiful place to live.
The last charter member died in 2003 at the age of 93.
Club Motto: One is nearer to God in a garden than
anywhere else on earth.

75 Years of Service
PLANT AMERICA: BEAUTIFYING OUR TOWN'S VIEW
As has been emphasized since the inception of Garden Clubs, Townview members will lead the way inspiring and educating the community through gardening.
We will join together for fellowship to provide the opportunity to grow and learn. We hope to take our enthusiasm for our beautiful community to new heights by working with community gardens and school programs.
We will care for the present and ensure our future by creating excitement for what exists and making plans to enhance areas of need. Through our fellowship we will bring a level of involvement and excitement for what we have and learn ways to improve our areas. As we form a sisterhood with gardening as our focus, let us always remember, that through all our hard work and worthy efforts, to stop and smell the flowers . . . all for our beautiful gardens of Georgia. We salute those who have entrusted this wonderful club to our care as we celebrate and plan for a bright future. |
