Seven Hills
Garden Club, the oldest club in Rome and the third oldest in
Georgia, was established in 1925. One of the most
significant achievements has been the establishment and
maintenance of the Library Garden. In 1958, the Carnegie
Library Board asked Seven Hills Garden Club to help
establish an outdoor reading room.
With plans from the UGA
Architecture students and the hard work and donations of
members, an outdoor space was created. Twenty-five years
later Seven Hills was again asked to create a garden for the
new Sarah Hightower Regional Library. The Architecture
Department of UGA presented the plan, funds were raised and
labor began. Many plantings and furnishings were given as
memorials or in honor of special people.
Items were moved
from the old garden and refurbished. Seven Hills Garden
Club maintains and uses the garden which is open during
library hours for relaxation and reading. A water fountain,
gazebo and reading areas are interspersed throughout the
multi-level garden for the use of Rome’s citizens as a quiet
relaxing oasis in our beautiful city.
